Believe it or not, when all is equal between two competing college applicants, an eloquent, well written essay can be the deciding factor between the two. An essay may be optional but it is best that you complete an essay to better your chances of getting in. Here are a few tips to guide you in writing a perfect essay:
Get straight to the point. Some college essays have a maximum word or character limit because every admissions officer has a huge stack of essays to read every day. If you are writing an essay with only a minimum limit, try not to go over 700 words because you may be straining their patience.
Be honest. Do not enhance your achievements, title and offices. It is okay to have a small role in an organization.
Have a good use of grammar. Make sure you have very few or no grammatical errors. Use correct punctuation, beware of sentence fragments and use correct spelling. Also use good vocabulary.
Be vivid. Often a good essay is compared to a story, this is why it is important to provide details to help the reader imagine the setting, but DO NOT write fictionally.
Make sure you stay on topic. Focus on one aspect of your essay. Answer the question and don’t forget to elaborate.
